Tokyo is an easy destination for 4-5 days – so much to do and great food. A must stop is the Team Lab Borderless digital museum (book ahead and go early on the day) which is fantastic. Explore neighbourhoods and eat a lot of ramen (Afuri our fave). We skied in Nozawan Onsen which is about a 3 hr train ride from Tokyo and fabulous small town with free public onsens (baths) that are piping hot for winding down in the evening. This is a fantastic town and not a big resort town but rather a Japanese village with some great food (Gochisou for pizza, Tanuki, Wakagiri, Genki burger and coffee at St Antons) and then on to Kyoto (3.5 hour train). Kyoto is best spent exploring on foot or by bike and visiting all the shrines and older parts of town. We did an easy day trip to Hiroshim (about 1.5hr on train each way). Train travel both in cities and on the major routes is super easy and a pleasure. We stayed in Airbnb which were great. In Tokyo we stayed in Roppongi and then near Tokyo station. In Kyoto we stayed just outside of Gion to avoid the busy tourist areas.
